Press Release IRD Propert Tax Amendment

PROPERTY TAX AMENDMENT

The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) is pleased to announce significant amendments to the Property Tax Act, effective January 1, 2024.

On February 14, 2024, the Property Tax (Amendment) Act, 2024 was enacted, bringing noteworthy changes to the existing Property Tax Act of 2015. The primary adjustment involves the exclusion of residential properties from the scope of property taxation under the act. As a result, properties classified as residential will no longer be subject to property tax, and property owners will not receive a demand notice for the 2024 financial year.

It is crucial to understand that this exemption does not extend to residential properties categorized as long-term rental houses, apartments, or condominiums. Therefore, property tax will persist for improvements on land classified as residential and utilized for long-term rental purposes, such as leased or rented residential properties. Section 53(1)(k) of the Property Tax (Amendment) Act specifies that any outstanding tax, tax
arrears, interest, or penalties for Property Tax assessed or pending assessment for the 2023 financial year or any prior years, as outlined in the Act, will remain due and payable.

Property owners with outstanding balances are strongly encouraged to promptly contact the IRD Compliance and Collection Unit.
